Martha Wakefield, artist

Martha Wakefield (b. Auburn, ME) is a Boston based mixed media artist working in many disciplines: painting, photography, alternative process, assemblages and book making. Wakefield explores themes of memory, impermanence and family histories.

Recent solo shows include Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts in Providence, RI; Three Stones Gallery in Concord, MA; and Cambridge Art Canal Wall in Cambridge, MA; all in 2026. Recent group exhibits include The Curated Fridge/FotoFest 2026, Houston, TX; Leica Gallery, Boston, MA (2026); A Smith Gallery, Johnson City, TX (2026); Landau Gallery, New York (2025); Hurricane Island Center, Rockport, ME (2024); Juniper Rag, Worcester, MA (2023); The Broad Institute, Cambridge, MA (2021); and other venues nationally. Wakefield’s work has been featured in What Will You Remember, Boston Globe, Artscope Magazine, Vasari 21, and WellsPoint newsletter. Her paintings are in the corporate collections of Moneta, Boston Investment Advisors, Worcester, MA; Meditech Corporation, Westwood, MA; and Great-West Financial, Kansas City, KS; and many private collections internationally. She curated the group show Grey Matter at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center, Gloucester, MA (2017): and the inaugural show Flirt at Mother Brooks Art Center in Dedham, MA (2014). Wakefield has been awarded residencies at Vermont Studios Center, Johnson, VT; Weir Farm, Ridgefield, CT; and Chateau Orquevaux in Orquevaux, France.

She is represented by Three Stones Gallery in Concord, MA; and Hera Gallery in Wakefield, RI.

She splits her time between her home and studio in Belmont, MA and coastal Maine.
